A Call to Action: Let the post TEDxDubai 2009 conversation begin!

10.10.09—a day to go down in history!

TEDxDubai was certainly not my usual experience of TED, which typically involves watching an 18-minute clip on YouTube from my couch or listening to a talk here or there via my iPod car kit while on long drives through the desert. A normal TED experience for me involves taking in one talk, followed by countless thinking and dinner discussions with my husband before moving onto the next. Our discussions typically go something like… “What did he mean?” “Interesting idea, what if we apply it in another context?” “What can we take away from her idea that can be applied to our own business/thinking?” “If you could give the ‘talk of your life,’ what would you say? Do?”

Nope! Yesterday’s TEDxDubai was a whole different ballgame! Instead of a leisure stroll through virtual TEDland like I’m used to, TEDxDubai felt more like running a ...

Abed Ayyad: Biophotonics

I’ve come to the UAE to shamelessly talk about biophotonics.

(Abed Ayyad, TEDxDubai 10.10.09)

Notes from the Talk:

What is biophotonics?

“A conflation of physics and cellular biology… It is about providing certainty via light.” Or as Wikipedia puts it:

The term biophotonics denotes a combination of biology and photonics, with photonics being the science and technology of generation, manipulation, and detection of photons, quantum units of light. Photonics is related to electronics in that it is believed that photons will play a similar central role in future information technology as electrons do today.

So what?

  • Biophotonics is helping us find innovative ways at understanding and attacking disease. (Think “bespoke medicine”.)

Why the UAE?

  • "Arab countries need to invest in scientific development".
  • Biophotonics is still new enough that we can make really crucial ...

Khulood Al Atiyat: Unleash… a Wandering Journal

Money is something that comes and goes. It is people’s talents and hopes that last!

(Khulood Al Atiyat, TEDxDubai 10.10.09)

The Talk:

A couple of years back Khulood and a group of friends wanted to bring back to the UAE a focus on the arts--as opposed to a constant focus on consumption and money. So, they created a number of empty journals to distribute across the UAE.

If you receive a journal, you must contribute to the journal and pass it on to someone else who will then contribute to the journal as well. Once each journal is filled, the creator of the last page must return the book to Khulood and co. to be read, researched and published…

Why are they doing this, you ask?

Khulood explains that the journals will showcase talents in the UAE and document the history of the UAE in ...

Joichi Ito: Innovation in Open Networks

In many places there is a huge stigma to making mistakes, this shouldn’t be the case!

(Joichi Ito, TEDxDubai 10.10.09)

Notes from Ito’s talk:

Part 1:

Ito discusses the nature of venture of capital and investing. “Everyone says, buy low, sell high…” As a venture capitalist, what else do you need to do?

Focus on:

  • The areas you understand.
  • Providing lots of value to the entrepreneur.
  • Taking risks. “You shouldn’t try to focus on minimizing loss. If you make a mistake, move on… The cost of failure has come way down”.
  • Time—Start-ups should focus 90% of their time on the 10% they do well.
  • Trying new things!

Part 2:

Ito discusses the history of the Internet, open standards and Creative Commons—standards and licenses that allow you and I to contribute ideas and content for the Web that can be mixed, remixed and shared.

Mohamed and Rashid Parham Al Awadhi: The Evolution of a Shawarma

We wanted to take a well-known Middle Eastern sandwich and give it an international flavor.

(Rashid)

In other words, PC, Mac!

(Mohamed)

Idea worth spreading:

Mohamed and Rashid Parham Al Awadhi talk about their education and experiences growing up—school, sports, food, singing jazz… Followed by experiences in the corporate world.

Nine years ago, the brothers had a crazy idea to re-brand the shawarma. At that time, they asked, “Why do we only have two sauce options for the shawarma?” So they brainstormed sauce ideas… Then they thought, “Why are there shawarmas everywhere, but not an international shawarma brand?” After seven years of brainstorming and pitches, the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Establishment for Young Business Leaders gave the brothers to opportunity to pursue their dream of reinventing the shawarma!

See what they created here.

Mohmmed Saeed Harib: From Zero to Hero!

I really wanted to preserve my culture and show it to the world!

(Mohmmed Saeed Harib, TEDxDubai 10.10.09)

Idea worth spreading:

In university Mohmmed studied art and animation in Boston. He emphatically did not want to be a CEO (a.k.a. grumps)!

At one point during his studies, Mohmmed was given an assignment to design a super hero based on his culture. Upon thinking deeply about the task, he immediately thought of his grandmother. His grandmother (and all grandmothers) teach, care for children and keep houses in harmony. They are the unsung superheroes of society!

So, upon return to Dubai, Mohmmed sought funding for his project (an idea to create an animation about superhero grandmas)... a process that required meetings with many CEOs… With hard work, passion and determination to succeed, he created Freej—something that started as a sketch on paper and turned into an ...

Ian Gilbert, Why do I Need a Teacher When I’ve Got the Internet?

“Is a broken down car parked?” (Ian Gilbert, TEDxDubai 10.10.09)

Gilbert’s Idea Worth Sharing

Thunks are about independent thinking and getting student’s to think for themselves.

Teaching is about developing your own thinking. Student brains have to be opened enough to solve problems. What are we doing to teach kids to think?

3 Parts to independent thinking: Technology, Education, Neuroscience.

Some neuroscience facts…It takes 20-30 years for the brain to mature. You can’t be older than your brain.  There is a 2-3 year old spread in the brain of children.

There is a difference between thinking and knowing.

Call to Action

Education shift to focus on technology (example: tutorvista.com), education (thinking, thunks), and neuroscience

Idea worth spreading:

Lundgren discusses his lifelong search for happiness and his mission to change the world. Here are some lessons he’s learned along the way…

  • Leaders need to think about feelings. CEOs should consider themselves Chief Emotional Officers.
  • Leaders and employees must pay it forward, volunteer, act from the heart…
  • How are you going to change the world if you don’t talk about education?
  • Investments should be socially responsible.
  • Find your purpose. Then start to live it.
  • Connect your dots—Dream Do Be!

Mohammed Gawdat, Is Technology Democratizing Our Perspective?

“Your way is not the only way of doing things,”  Mohammed Gawdat

“We come with the equation that I am right and if I am right the other guy is wrong,” Mohammed Gawdat

Some highlights from Gawdat’s talk include:

With the spread of Mass media so knowledge spreads. Information is manufactured at scale.  With the abundance of information you become passive and take in information. There has been an increase in cross-cultural misunderstandings.

The internet is changing. What does the Internet do? How do people use it?

People learn and acquire knowledge

People communicate

People participate

People socialize

People are willing to use or not use the Internet.

Google gets billions of questions a day. 250,000 words get written every minute of every day on a blog.

In 2008, 210 billion emails were sent. 130 million articles ...

Leo Laporte: The Coming Creative Explosion

The world really needs new media now. It really needs for us to speak together.

(Leo Laporte, TEDxDubai 10.10.09)

Laporte's idea worth spreading:

In a discussion of the history of media, Laporte tells us that mass media seduced us into a sleep and that now new media is awakening us! New media treats the audience as intelligent real people that want to hear authentic messages (something mass media didn’t do!).

“I want to encourage you to blog, to podcast, to create videos on YouTube! We’ve been trained to sit down and shut-up… It is now time to start standing up and being heard. Start telling a story, singing a song… We’re so used to the professionals telling us what to do. It is our time to tell the stories!”

Call to action:

Tell your story—blog, podcast, make a video on YouTube!
