About Dr. Sgouris Sgouridis
Dr. Sgouris Sgouridis is an Assistant Professor in Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, a private, not-for-profit, independent, graduate-research institute developed in Abu Dhabi, UAE with the support and cooperation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
His current research and teaching interests include sustainable transportation systems, sustainable energy systems, sustainable energy, and management for engineers.
Dr. Sgouridis is the Principal Investigator researching ‘Commercial Aviation in a Carbon-Constrained Future’ at Masdar Institute, with the objective of creating modeling tools and knowledge database that would allow informed policy decisions and business strategies that are robust under different possible future scenarios due to daily challenges that are facing aviation globally. The research project is being carried out in collaboration with MIT, through Principal Investigator Professor R. John Hansman. His research interests include commercial aviation, sustainability, dynamics of large-scale socio-technical systems, and environmental impacts of transport.
Prior to his role in MI, Dr. Sgouridis worked at governmental and private organizations including the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Port Authority of Thessaloniki, and the Hellenic Army -- Army Corps of Engineers.
He holds a PhD in Engineering Systems from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2007), MS in Technology and Policy from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2005), and MS in Transportation from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2005). Dr. Sgouridis received the Martin Fellowship for Sustainability (2004-2005), and an award for Excellence in Academic Performance from the Chambers of Engineers (1998 and 1999).
About TEDxDuctac
TEDxDUCTAC was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading." The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals in Dubai the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level. TEDxDUCTAC will occur take place monthly at the KILACHAND STUDIO in the Dubai Community Theatre & Arts Centre.
While the content and design of each TEDx event is unique and developed independently, all TEDx events have several features in common:
* TED's celebrated format: A suite of short, carefully prepared talks, demonstrations and performances on a wide range of subjects to foster learning, inspiration and wonder -- and to provoke conversations that matter
* TEDTalks videos: A minimum of two pre-recorded talks from the acclaimed TEDTalks video series will be shown
